Justin Verlander has spent much of his final season trying to turn the Tigers clubhouse into his own personal remake of For Love of the Game. Unfortunately for Jake Rogers, Verlander chose the worst possible moment for his most ambitious reenactment yet. Just before the Tigers were set to release their longtime catcher, Verlander summoned Rogers for the film’s emotional late-game mound visit, insisting that he deliver lines about the team not stinking, the defense making plays behind him and the veteran pitcher finding enough strength for one final throw. What Verlander imagined as a stirring tribute to baseball loyalty quickly became an accidental farewell scene—and Rogers soon realized that “just throw” was not the only phrase taking on an uncomfortable second meaning.

VerlanderlayIndustries: we're doing the scene

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: what scene

VerlanderlayIndustries: "For Love of the Game"

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: again?

VerlanderlayIndustries: this is different
you're billy chapel's catcher

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: gus sinski

VerlanderlayIndustries: sure

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: you have watched this movie eighty times and don't know the catcher's name

VerlanderlayIndustries: i focus on the pitcher

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: shocking
*** DingleAllTheWay has entered the chat ***

DingleAllTheWay: what's happening

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: justin wants me to reenact a kevin costner movie

VerlanderlayIndustries: the mound visit scene
late in the perfect game
you come out and give me an inspiring speech

DingleAllTheWay: then what

VerlanderlayIndustries: then i say
"just throw"

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: technically the catcher says that

VerlanderlayIndustries: we'll workshop it
*** SkipHinch has entered the chat ***

SkipHinch: jake
can i see you in my office for a minute

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: sure

VerlanderlayIndustries: not yet
we need five minutes

SkipHinch: this probably shouldn't wait

VerlanderlayIndustries: neither should cinema

SkipHinch: ...
two minutes

VerlanderlayIndustries: plenty
*** VerlanderlayIndustries walks to an imaginary mound in the middle of the clubhouse ***

VerlanderlayIndustries: okay
ninth inning
yankee stadium
perfect game

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: it was the eighth inning
and we're in the clubhouse

VerlanderlayIndustries: use your imagination

DingleAllTheWay: should we make crowd noise

VerlanderlayIndustries: yes

DingleAllTheWay: booooooooo

VerlanderlayIndustries: supportive crowd noise

DingleAllTheWay: wrong stadium
*** GreeneMachine has entered the chat ***

GreeneMachine: why is justin standing on a laundry basket

VerlanderlayIndustries: it's the mound

GreeneMachine: that belongs to the visiting clubhouse

VerlanderlayIndustries: art requires sacrifice

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: one second
apparently i have to preserve the sanctity of a fictional perfect game first

VerlanderlayIndustries: okay
come to the mound
*** TheyCallMeMisterRogers slowly approaches the laundry basket ***

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: what am i supposed to say

VerlanderlayIndustries: tell me my arm is gone

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: your arm is gone

VerlanderlayIndustries: with emotion

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: your arm has been gone since april

VerlanderlayIndustries: that's too real

GreeneMachine: great delivery, though

VerlanderlayIndustries: then tell me i've given everything i have

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: you've given everything you have

VerlanderlayIndustries: yes

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: mostly to the injured list

VerlanderlayIndustries: jake

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: sorry
i'm having trouble finding the character's motivation

SkipHinch: his motivation is to finish quickly

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: noted

VerlanderlayIndustries: now i tell you that i'm going back out there
and you look me in the eyes
and say the line

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: which line

VerlanderlayIndustries: "just throw"

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: okay
just throw

VerlanderlayIndustries: no
it needs weight

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: just throw

VerlanderlayIndustries: more emotion
you have to say it like we've spent our whole careers together

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: we haven't

VerlanderlayIndustries: like you've caught every pitch i've ever thrown

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: i haven't

VerlanderlayIndustries: like this may be our final moment as teammates
*** Everyone looks away ***

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: okay
why did that one make everyone uncomfortable

GreeneMachine: strong acting

DingleAllTheWay: very immersive
*** ScottyDoesntKnow has entered the chat ***

ScottyDoesntKnow: the scene has achieved unexpected organizational relevance

VerlanderlayIndustries: wait
he's about to deliver the line

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: justin, we don't stink right now
the boys are making plays behind you

VerlanderlayIndustries: good

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: you've given us everything you've got
which this season has mostly been veteran leadership from the injured list

VerlanderlayIndustries: unnecessary improvisation

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: your arm is hanging
your career is over

VerlanderlayIndustries: jake, that's not—

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: but you want the ball anyway

VerlanderlayIndustries: now you're getting it

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: so just throw

VerlanderlayIndustries: there it is

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: throw the ball

VerlanderlayIndustries: right

ScottyDoesntKnow: jake
when you're finished here, we'd like to discuss an organizational transaction

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: what kind of transaction

ScottyDoesntKnow: one that reflects our evolving roster architecture

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: am i being traded

ScottyDoesntKnow: we remain transactionally agnostic

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: am i being optioned

ScottyDoesntKnow: your remaining options are not central to the framework

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: am i being released

ScottyDoesntKnow: we acknowledge that release is one of several words available in the english language

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: scott
am i being released

ScottyDoesntKnow: aj would like to see you in his office

ScottyDoesntKnow: i believe i preserved the human element

SkipHinch: you absolutely did not

VerlanderlayIndustries: hold on
this makes the scene even more powerful

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: does it

VerlanderlayIndustries: you're not just telling me to throw the baseball
you're telling me to continue without you

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: i don't think that's what the movie is about

VerlanderlayIndustries: it's what our version is about

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: your version seems mean

VerlanderlayIndustries: it's bittersweet

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: mostly bitter from where i'm standing
*** SkubalRising has entered the chat ***

SkubalRising: what's going on

DingleAllTheWay: justin is making jake reenact an emotional farewell scene

SkubalRising: before or after they tell him

GreeneMachine: apparently during

ScottyDoesntKnow: we strive to consolidate overlapping conversations

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: can we please finish this

VerlanderlayIndustries: yes
one final take
come out to the mound
*** TheyCallMeMisterRogers approaches the laundry basket again ***

VerlanderlayIndustries: my arm is hanging by a thread
every pitch could be my last

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: realistic

VerlanderlayIndustries: but i look toward home plate
and i see you

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: for about another four minutes

VerlanderlayIndustries: jake

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: sorry

VerlanderlayIndustries: tell me what to do

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: just throw

VerlanderlayIndustries: again

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: just throw

VerlanderlayIndustries: louder

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: JUST THROW
*** TheyCallMeMisterRogers throws VerlanderlayIndustries's glove across the clubhouse ***

VerlanderlayIndustries: that isn't the scene

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: neither is getting designated for assignment between takes

DingleAllTheWay: technically he threw

GreeneMachine: best arm in the room
*** WORDUPTHOME has entered the chat ***

WORDUPTHOME: HEY GUYS THIS IS JI
JIM THOME

WORDUPTHOME: JAKE
SOMETIMES BASEBALL THROWS YOU A CURVEBALL
AND SOMETIMES BASEBALL THROWS YOU OUT

THAT CAME OUT WRONG

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: appreciate the effort, jim

WORDUPTHOME: BUT EVERY ENDING IS ALSO A NEW BEGINNING
UNLESS YOU GROUND INTO A DOUBLE PLAY
THEN IT IS TWO ENDINGS

VerlanderlayIndustries: jake
before you go
one more thing

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: what

VerlanderlayIndustries: in the movie
after the perfect game
billy chapel retires

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: yes

VerlanderlayIndustries: so technically
you're leaving the team before i am

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: you already retired

VerlanderlayIndustries: cinematically, jake

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: right
just retire

VerlanderlayIndustries: that's not the line

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: it is now
*** MLB_NewsBot has entered the chat ***

MLB_NewsBot: The Detroit Tigers have released catcher Jake Rogers.
Rogers departed after reenacting an emotional scene from "For Love of the Game" at Justin Verlander's request.
Sources describe the timing as “unfortunate” and “tone-deaf.”

VerlanderlayIndustries: i thought it gave him closure

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: you made me catch your imaginary perfect game before firing me

SkipHinch: technically the organization fired you

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: thank you, aj

VerlanderlayIndustries: look at it this way
gus sinski didn't return for the sequel either

TheyCallMeMisterRogers: there was no sequel

VerlanderlayIndustries: exactly
*** TheyCallMeMisterRogers has left to catch on with literally anyone else ***
*** VerlanderlayIndustries has left to request one final dramatic bullpen session ***
